“Put on your mama shoes.” That’s what I finally told myself about a month ago after a park play date that ended with sand in my shoes and in my house. I asked my friend Stacy what she was planning on doing for summer and we both realized that the shoes we’ve been wearing may have cut it with a baby last summer when all we did was push a swing standing still, but they were not going to cut it with our active toddler boys who were big enough to run fast, but still too small to be safe on all of the playground equipment. We need to be ON at the playground.
I am not sporty. I don’t wear tennis shoes or any kind of sneakers with jeans. I wear them with workout/running clothes only. And I only where them when I’m going for a work out. Not that there is anything wrong with them, it’s just me. I’m weird like that.
But, this spring proved that the time was here to finally buy some playground shoes. Why does it take me so long to discover simple ways to make life just a bit easier?
Yesterday, I finally said “Bring it on sand and rocks. No more ballet flats and sandals for this mama. I have playground shoes.” Sorry for the repeat from Instagram for those of you who follow me there.
It just felt good to say goodbye to fancy shoes and get real! I have a toddler. I have a toddler boy. I have an active toddler boy. Time for change. At the playground, anyway.
And our playground trip yesterday was the best ever. I wasn’t constantly pouring sand or rocks out of my shoes. I wasn’t uncomfortable. I wasn’t annoyed by that feeling and I didn’t have to dump out my shoes when I got home. It was awesome! I also didn’t have to worry about my shoes falling off.
My purple Converse Jack Purcell’s were a bargain. I found them in my size at Nordstrom Rack for $35. They vary in price from $40 to more than $100 not on sale. Time to enjoy summer, friends! Put on your mama shoes!

What’s funny is I can’t really see the picture on my phone and when you said you “don’t wear sneakers with jeans,” I literally thought “not even converse?!” Lol. I have an addiction to “cute” sneakers. And converse are my faves! Love the lavender too!
Ha! Well, these are my first pair and I’m in love. Mine are fitted to my foot all the way to the top. I can run in them, play in them and everything in between. Love! I may need to get an addiction to cute sneakers to make life easier and better. :)
I definitely have had similar sentiments regarding tennis shoes and jeans and about having to adapt footwear to the given reality. I nannied forever before having my own and realized quickly what most moms also do…when dressed for play and fun everyone usually has more fun! And my go to shoes are sperry angelfish slip ons!
Oooh! Love the recommendation for Sperry’s. You are so right about dressing for play and fun! Just took me a while to get it.
I never wear tennis shoes, either (except for workouts). Are you telling me that you didn’t get any sand in those converse shoes??? I would guess that sand in the shoes is inevitable!
Yes, they were awesome. They are super tight around the foot and even though they don’t have laces, they are sewn to the top, so it was great. Huge difference.
I agree! I hate sand in shoes…
