Last time we chatted about money with SunTrust Bank was just before Thanksgiving, but now we’re well into the season of spending. Our family has made some fun changes this year including doing a “white elephant” exchange instead of a gift exchange, adopted a few families instead of buying gifts for each other and more. These changes will definitely help all of us enjoy the holiday season in a more meaningful way.

Meaningful within your means

Sometimes staying on budget, even when following SunTrust’s holiday budget sheet is hard. Unexpected things come up. Or you spend more on someone than you planned for a variety of reasons. For me, I’ve spent more on a few things out of the need to order online right away. I probably could’ve waited for a sale, but I’m trying to get things done to avoid feeling stressed.

SunTrust Bank has created a Holiday Planning Guide of ideas and advice to help make your holiday meaningful within your means. My favorite thing is their list of steps to take to avoid breaking the bank.

A few of my favorite tips:

1. Start early. Consider starting to save for the holidays as early as January. Obviously it’s too late for this now, but would be a good way to start the new year.

2. Make a gift list with a dollar-amount listed. This was the first year I added dollar amount and it helped tremendously. Otherwise, it’s shocking how quickly $20 here and $30 here add up.

3. Avoid procrastination. I know that when I wait too long and am running out of time, I tend to just spend more to get it done.

SunTrust’s Holiday Hub of information and tools can help you avoid the holiday hangover and celebrate within your means.

If you’re feeling financially stressed or not enjoying the holiday season for financial reasons of any sort, swing by the SuntTrust Resource Center and take advantage of the fantastic tools that will help you keep the holidays meaningful within your means.

At SunTrust Bank their purpose is lighting the way to financial well-being. They want to help you reduce holiday stress through tools, advice, and inspiration that encourages you to make your holidays meaningful by spending within your means and focusing on meaningful experiences.
